MOTOR SPORTS:
COMPLEX, INTENSE, FOCUSED AND STRATEGIC. AUTO RACING REQUIRES PRECISION, PREPARATION AND CONTINUAL DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT TO REMAIN COMPETITIVE. RACING IS INSANELY INTENSE, WITH NO MARGIN FOR ERROR!
If it has wheels, people will race it. From 2-cylinder Citroen sedans and 4-cylinder sports cars to 8-cylinder and 12-cylinder high-performance production racecars and Stock Cars, to GTP cars, to Formula Cars, to jet propelled World Land Speed Record cars. There are racing categories in which men compete against similar cars of damn near any size and configuration. Motorcycles are similar, all run in a specific class with matched and similar vehicles, relying on the skills of the driver to win.
I have been involved in this sport since 1969 in virtually every role, from driver and car owner, to grunt and crew member to hired gun. It is addictive. Aside from driving and working with some major teams, my primary racing involvement and staying close to this intense sport is my photography.
Rest assured she's forgotten more about the Ferrari's she works on than most of us will ever know.
I love seeing women break this barrier and become part of this great sport.

The two men responsible for my becoming a race car driver, Carroll Shelby and Dan Gurney. In 1968, in Gurney's Anaheim, CA shop I asked what I needed to do to become a racing driver - I was 19; Dan gave me a serious glance and sized me up, Carroll simply commented: "You're a shitty driver now, kid. Get yourself a cheap-ass race car and learn to race. If you're good, you'll keep getting better cars. Good luck, kid." Life lesson learned - Tell it like it is. Carroll became a dear and respected mentor after getting reacquainted with him in the early 1990's. Our offices were only 2 miles apart, and we ended up having lunch periodically while I managed Sprint's Southern California operations. His response to my asking why those chassis and spare body parts were still sitting in his warehouse and not being turned into the Cobras he is famous for: "There's a lot of shitty drivers who bought my cars. People crash their cars. We help them keep their Cobras on the road." No filters. RIP Carroll and my sincerest thanks.
